To my former students and others interested in history.
It seems like each school year ended and I was not able to tell my
students all that I thought important.
This website picks up where I left off in your high school history,
civics, politics or economics class. It is mostly
recommendations for books that help us understand history and
the world in which we live.
I believe history is made up of many stories, all of which point
ultimately to the story of this world. There is an original
story from which all these stories emerge and to which they all
refer. All these stories assume intelligence, purpose and
meaning. They rest upon common human experiences of beauty,
right and wrong, self-sacrifice and courage. These things make
no sense if the universe is just an accident with no ultimate
meaning.
This website is a logical extension of my teaching in the classroom where
I sought to introduce you to the various controversies that have
been part of American history. I tried to provide you with a
variety of viewpoints, not simply the current politically
correct view.
Introducing you to what others have thought about these important
questions is a way of advancing your own thinking. I have
included a variety of topics in
American history that I hope you find interesting and thought-provoking.

Do you remember the scene in the movie, Schindler’s List, where
Oscar Schindler is saying goodbye to the Jews he protected from
the Nazis. He is lamenting that he had not done more. That is
how I feel about teaching. I could have done more for my
students. This website is a little more for my students.
